Overview:
Racial disparity is a reality in American healthcare leading to poor communication between patient and health care team as plans of care are developed. Distrust between patients and medical team also exists.  (Institute of Medicine, 2003, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care. Washington, DC: The National Academies Press https://doi.org/10.17226/12875).

The article presented in this webinar found that the Black community experiences this disparity more than other segments of the population. This dynamic has a long history from before the Tuskegee syphilis experiments to current experiences such as black patients being less likely to receive the same level of health care as others segments of society and getting less information about their ailment than all other populations.

It is critical chaplains be aware of the literature documenting black patients’ disenfranchisement in personal healthcare. With greater awareness the chaplain likely will increase their ability to advocate for disenfranchised persons and develop more options to benefit disenfranchised people in their pastoral care.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will become familiar with the findings of barriers in health care by reviewing the 2023 article: “Shared decision making (SDM) with black patients: a scoping review”
2. Participants will hear actual experiences in support of these findings from a black BCC chaplain who also has been a patient, and a white BCC chaplain.
3. Participants will explore options chaplains can utilize when faced with these experiences.

How It Works
To participate, all that is needed is a computer with Internet access and speakers, as the presentation audio and visuals are broadcast through ZOOM. Our webinars are priced per computer terminal, not per participant. That means you can invite as many colleagues to join you as can fit in your conference room or cluster around your computer. As a participant, you will be able to interact with the presenters, who will ask questions of the audience and answer questions posed by participants.

How to participate:
Registrants will receive a confirmation with a link to participate in the ZOOM meeting. This confirmation will be sent from ZOOM a couple days before the session. Please do NOT share the Zoom meeting information with others.

Please Note:
Many hospitals/institutions limit access to outside service providers (like Zoom) so please check with your IT department to verify access before registering.
