Description:

Overview:
The ACPE Anti-Bias Workgroup has established a task force on ableism as one of the forms of bias that should be addressed in pastoral care and training programs. Between now and the conference, that Task Force will be interviewing chaplains and supervisors with disabilities to hear their stories, issues encountered, and ideas for addressing ableism related to attitudes, program training, supervision and the delivery of pastoral care. This workshop will summarize that research in both written/spoken formats and video-clips, as well as input by workshop participants. The overall purpose will be to build the capacity of pastoral care and training programs to include students with disabilities, to address issues in supervision, and to address the spiritual needs of people with disabilities in health care settings. In other words, we will be inviting shared pastoral and theological reflection on lived experience, for the purpose of enhanced pastoral and supervisory skills.

Learning Objectives:
  • To provide resources and strategies for CPE programs and supervisors to address issues related to ableism in pastoral and professional development, including accommodations and supports for students with disabilities
  • To addressing issues of accessibility, inclusion, and accommodations for students through the lens of students, chaplains, and supervisors with disabilities who have participated in Clinical Pastoral Education
  • To explore ways that disability is interpreted in varied cultural, ethnic, and religious traditions and the impact of health care inequities experienced by people with disabilities and their families
  • To share strategies and resources (people, readings, videos, organizations, etc) for infusing disability into pastoral care training curricula and continuing education
