Description:

Overview:
ICU survivors, particularly those diagnosed with COVID-19, face a potentially long and complex recovery. Patients who need intensive care, especially those who are put on ventilators, are at risk for Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). This can affect the patient's body as well as the mind, and less well documented the patient's spiritual well-being. A relatively new approach to supporting patients' recovery is an outpatient interdisciplinary ICU survivor clinic. With only about a dozen clinics nationwide, hear from a clinic's founding physician and a chaplain-researcher who are working together to identify patients' holistic needs and treat them.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe an interdisciplinary approach to outpatient care utilizing an ICU Survivor Center as an example
  • Identify components of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) and related spiritual needs
  • Name one potential benefit and one potential challenge of joint chaplain-physician visits in an outpatient setting
