Overview

Recent research into the use of psychedelic medicines to treat behavioral health conditions has gained widespread media attention. The prospect of effectively helping people who suffer from PTSD, depression, and anxiety with psychedelics has created hope for some and skepticism for others. Chaplains have a significant role to play as studies consistently link spiritual/mystical experiences as mediators of clinical improvement in psychedelic assisted therapies. This symposium will describe current research and how professional Chaplains can be involved. The expert panel of presenters will discuss the competencies necessary for Chaplains to provide ethical, safe, and helpful care, the spiritual and religious implications of plant medicines and how to honor indigenous traditions, as well as the importance of ecological considerations. Psychedelic assisted therapies represent an area of potential growth for the field of chaplaincy, and we need to be prepared.
